We are ecstatic to announce that our Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center project was named “Project of the Year” by the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA)! It also earned two additional awards: Best in Design Excellence - Architecture and Award of Excellence - Buildings/Facilities. We partnered with Architects Page/ and MJMA on this unique design-build project, which was delivered to Arlington County in 2021.

One-of-a-Kind Design

The unique “origami-shaped” building was carefully designed with the surrounding environment and ecosystem in mind. The large glass windows feature “bird-frit” to protect birds from the nearby Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary. Rain gardens facilitate stormwater management by collecting and filtering the water before it is released into the Potomac watershed. A chloramine capture system in the natatorium optimizes interior air quality. The windows are strategically placed and have calibrated glazing ratios to provide optimal daylight while preventing an unsafe glare on the water. The building has several sustainable features and is certified LEED Silver by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

The facility also features a fitness center, three multipurpose rooms, two community rooms, and other amenities

Bringing Recreational Amenities to Arlington

The 92,513-square-foot facility offers more than just a 50-meter competition pool. It also includes a 4,000-square-foot leisure pool designed for families, a fitness center with a cardio area and weight room, a three-lane running track, locker rooms, and much more, offering Arlington residents a wide array of amenities.

A Jewel in Arlington

Built adjacent to Reagan National Airport, the iconic Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center has a highly visible presence with a glowing façade to I-395 commuters. The luminous north elevation and clean folded roof lines are visible from the air to the 23 million passengers arriving at DCA. In addition to being recognized by DBIA, the facility has won several awards from various organizations, including the Virginia Recreation and Park Society (VRPS), Washington Building Congress, the Washington DC and Northern Virginia Chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), NAIOP Northern VA, DESIGN Arlington, and Athletic Business Media.
