Since the Food and Drug Administration recently granted an emergency clearance, Thermo Fisher Scientific is producing 5 million new tests towards detection of COVID-19. In a recent press conference, President Trump stated, “I’d also like to thank Thermo Fisher. The FDA’s goal is to hopefully authorize their application within 24 hours — it’ll go very quickly; it’s going very quickly — which will bring, additionally, 1.4 million tests on board next week and 5 million within a month” (White House).
The Thermo Fisher Scientific in Hunt Valley, MD includes a bioreactor lab, cell culture fermentation lab, blood lab, and snap-micro lab.
FDA Commissioner, Stephen Hahn, said they are “working around the clock to review and authorize diagnostics during this public health emergency” (StatNews). Marc Casper, president and CEO of Thermo Fisher Scientific, said, “We are committed to fighting this disease and we will continue to work with regulatory authorities and customers around the world to expand the availability of diagnostic testing and stem the spread of the coronavirus” (Yahoo Finance).
